What is Media?

What is Media?

Media is the main means of mass communication of information such as television, radio and newspapers. There are different ways to use media in an institution such as showing specific codes and conventions to target audience so they can understand the media text. Media can inform and influence people’s opinions. Media can connect people through such tools as social networking (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter etc.) There are different ways to access media through platforms (vehicle) such as print media and press photography. Certain media types can also persuade certain types of audiences for example, Dior shows a beautiful woman holding the perfume. This makes the target audience want to aspire to be like her so they would buy the perfume.

Mass media is a form of communication to provide information to the target audience through TV, Magazines, and Radio etc. Some web based platforms such as “BBC News” website also show audio and video which can entertain and get the attention of the audience. Some sources in web based media such as “Wikipedia” is biased because it can be edited by the public and may not be accurate. Some print based media such as “The Sun” is biased because they usually only show one side of a story or do not give enough information.
